MCCC vs Riverside AWAY Saturday 29 July 2006
MCCC win by 2 runs
Match Report by Cuan Broan

On a balmy Saturday afternoon, the Morden crew descended apon the Alexandar grounds not realizing what was in store for them. Heroes were to be made on this unsuspecting wicket in the middle of Epsom. New signing Jason, immediately set about investigating the pitch, but showed his lack of knowledge of the English wickets when he could not figure out which of the 6 evenly mowed pitches we were going to be playing on. This was probably because he was looking for the Africa like concrete clay strip, and could not discern the differences between the grass on the pitch and the feld! We also suspect the groundkeeper was on strike that week or the mower had broken down.

The day started with an omen that surely foretold the outcome of the day. Our skipper, Andrew, widely know by one and all as a poor tosser, managed to push one out. And he managed to win the toss too. Morden were to bat first, a rare thing indeed. Play was delayed due to the low flying pigs buzzing the pitch.Jason and Mark strode to the crease, and immediately set about their tasks with grit and determination. The fast outfield and small boundary meant that ball raced off the bat and boundaries seemed to be the order of the day. In fact there was very little running throughout both innings of the game by batsmen or fielder alike, because everyone was watching the ball accelerate to the neighbors gardens.

Riverside initially bowled a good line and length and seemed to be getting assistance off the pitch with movement and tennis like bounce. Mark started off well cracking some glorious shots to the boundary, but, was unfortunately dismissed by one of the opening pair for 8. Our secret weapon, the Nick "The big easy" Hughes made his way to the wicket. Unfortunately the excesses of the previous week seemed to show in the batting performance and Nicks reach seemed to extend to the pint glass only. In his quest to unite his fags and his pint, he was cleaned bowled and trundled off to light one up.

Next up was Magic Majid, a classy wristy player that started well and quickly blazed his way to 30 odd runs. It was at this moment that riversides tactical game play came into affect with the introduction of a devastating spinner. The first delivery came out of the hand and was well on its way to point fielder when Maj had a moment of insanity. Maj raced the 30 or so paces to the point fielder and played a devastating stroke straight into the hands of the cover fielder, whom had no choice but to catch the ball. Failure to do so would have meant that that the ball would have traveled through his abdomen and removed his spine.

Steve O Neil strode into the fray and due to his counting abilities (that did not include odd numbers) decided that the number for the day was 4, a vast quantity of them to the delight of the riverside bowlers. Roy "Jack Rabbit" Cummings arrived at the crease to deliver some solid strikes and big sixes. Roy decided that he would call the runs by running up to his batting partner and whisper it in his ear. On occasion his batting partner did not agree with the decision which meant Roy would need to run 2 for no result. Rob ambled to the crease using a Q's new £20 bat and prompted started knocking it in for a healthy score of 19.

Andrew J made a short amusing trip out to the batting track which failed to trouble the scorers. This included a demonstration on how to leave a full toss delivery aimed at the top of off stump. Jason "I can bat a bit" Borea held up an end for 39 overs showing some devastating form and offering very few chances. Jason dispatched all the riverside bowlers with disdain, including 18x4?s and 4x6?s in his total of 125. One would say that he seemed to acclimatize quite comfortably to the English wickets in helping MCCC reach a respectable total of 273. A rather defendable score, or so we thought!

Riverside strode to the crease with purpose and fire in their eyes. The openers got off to a solid start and besides a drop catch and some streaky edges through the gulley region, batted extremely well. Riverside did not lose a wicket until close on 100 runs. The bowling line up had a torrid day, on a wicket that favored the batting. Well, that was excuse they used for going at around 7 an over (besides our skipper Andrew). At 170 odd for 2, with 14 overs remaining it seemed as if the game was in the bag for Riverside. Confidence were high, as were the comments from the sideline. So much so in fact, that pads were removed, kit bags packed and some of the team even went off to shower.

The turning point in the game came when Andrew "Skip" Jarret brought himself back on. Looking down what seemed to be the barrel of the gun, the skip struck. Firstly, removing the stylish opener on 127 whom was caught enthusiastically by a sobering Nick Hughes. To further pull the game back, he then trapped their dangerous bat for the first LBW decision of the season. This was the tuning point of the game. With 50 odd runs to get in 10 overs, the cat was squarely set amongst the pigeons. The recent silence from the sidelines was complimented by the voices on the field which MCCC seemed to have lost between the 10th and 30th over's. MCCC kicked into high gear taking holding some great catches in the deep and bowling a tight line and length.

Riverside kicked into high gear, pulling pads on and unpacking the kitbag. Andrew was joined by a resurgent Roy and Steve "Bowl me at the death" O'Neil to put the brakes on the oppositions innings. The wickets tumbled as Riverside hiccupped. The cricketing gods pulled the overly confident opposition onto their knees and proceeded to spank them black and blue. Riverside collapsed, losing 6 wickets in 40 runs. At 263 for 8, with 6 balls remaining and 11 runs to win the game was on.

Steve O Neil was tasked by the skip to finish off the innings. With hearts in our mouths and the oppo biting their nails on the sideline the bat drove the ball to deep long on which was parried over the boundary by Jason "I can bat but cant bowl" Borea for 6. One delivery left, 3 to win, 2 to tie, 1 to lose. Steve "Nerves of Steel" O Neil fired the delivery into leg and a single was taken, in trying to make the second the opposition were run out! MCCC had WON by single run!!! Over 500 runs, 17 wickets (stumpings, run-outs, great catches, caught and bowled) and some hefty shots, this game had it all. If Carlsberg scripted cricket games, they would have scripted this one!

MCCC vs Old Whitgiftians Saturday 22 July 2006

Weather: Hot and humid
Toss won by: MCCC lost toss and bowled first
Pitch Condition: Dry, green in places
Match Format: Timed Game
MCCC Total: 147/7 off 30 overs

MCCC Batting Order:1.Steve O-o
2.Mark B-5
3.Roy C-43
4.Jason W-37 n/o
5.Keith P- 23
6.Rob K-1
7.Andrew J-9
8.Chris W-20
9.Cuan B-0 n/o
10.Steve V-dnb
11.Grahame P-dnb

Notable batting performances:
Whitgifitian’s, fielding a mix of seniors and colts, were all out for 146. The author of this piece opened the Corinthians batting and the less said about the first ball of his innings the better, save to say it was a ‘tumbleweed’ moment – suffering the lonely walk back to the pavilion. Indeed, yours truly had plenty of time to contemplate the heartache of a golden duck.

The Colts bowled tidily, with energy and enthusiasm, sedating the flow of runs mid-way into the chase. However, Jason W (37 n/o) helped Corinthians cruise comfortably to a 3 wicket victory, with a solid, patient innings. Appropriately, Jason went on to hit the winning run, and deservedly was named man-of-the match for his performance with the bat and contribution in fielding. Also worthy of mention in the batting were Roy C, Keith P, and AJ.

Oppostion Total:
146/9 off 41 overs

Notable Bowling performances:
Jarrett sends Old Whitgiftians’ batsmen packing. The blistering pace of Andrew Jarrett left the top order Whitgiftians batsman dazed and in no doubt that they were facing some awesome bowling.

A suit of armor was probably more appropriate body protection for the men at the crease as the onslaught was delivered from the very first ball. Attacking the off-stump with the precision of a guided missile, AJ ripped through the batting order with a brilliant spell of pace attack. He finished his superb 6-over spell with 4 maidens, conceding only 4 runs and claiming 3 wickets.

Excellent support from the Pavilion end came from Chris W (10-2-26 for 2), who troubled the batsmen, moving the ball off the seam and beating the bat several times. Chris was unlucky not to have added to his tally of wickets. Both opening bowlers took advantage of the generous lift of the pitch.
Cuan showed us all how to bowl an 12 ball over. A wonderfull mix of beamers and 12ft wides. He setteled down after his initial demonstration to bowl a good line and length, picking up a wicket with an excellent catch from steve behind the stumps. grahame bowled a great economical spell'

Match Result: Mccc won by 3 wckts'

Champagne moment:
Roy smashing 3 sixes off of the opener, some hitting the tops of some very tall trees on the boundary. Jasons great knock, keiths caught and bowled( ripping the ball from Jasons hands)'

MCCC Man of the Match: Jason "Bullet" Ware

10.S Vickery-DNB
11.G Pinkneye-DNB

Notable batting performances:
Mix from Everyone. Nick was at his usally classy best before been given out off a no ball. Roy showed no mercy to the colts, and looked like he hit one of the colts over the boundary for six (the colt seemed to be attached to the ball at the time). Jason produced his best innings of the season with a fine 31 under immense pressure from the sidelines. Steve O was unfortunately caught out by a brilliant one handed " stick the hand out and prey" catch. To be fair he had been stumped earlier but given not out by Mark "wheres my glasses" Bartram. Andy was bowled by a shane warne delivery from a 3 ft tall colt after gathering a rapid 17. Jason tried his best but also succumed to a 2ft tall colt in the frenzy of hitting which followed in our chase.

Oppostion Total:
195-5 off 48 overs

Notable Bowling performances:
Steve O neil picked 2 up with some inswinging full tosses. Roy grabbed 1 as did Keith "whirlwind " pilgrim.

Match Result: Draw

Champagne moment:
To many to share. Mostly of the humourous nature.

MCCC Man of the Match: Jointly Shared'

Additional Comments about match:
A very weird game. A mixture of 3-5 ft tall colts and 60 year olds awaited us. The track was rock hard with absolutely no bounce. After been duped into a time game, the boys started off as normal keeping it tight. 7 runs scored off of the first 10 overs. The colts in particular seemed to be well drilled in how to use the outside edge of the bat. One of the young brigade actually scored 90% of his 40 runs through first and second slip. Never in the history of the game have so many balls passed though this area with carrying to hand.Very furstating. After 3 days in the field the oppo declared at 195 leaving us an hour and 20 overs to chase. It all stated well, but then the spin kings slowed things down somewhat by producing some prodigious spin. We chased hard but could not get the total in our allotment. If only we had those extra 5 overs that the oppo had more than us.

Notable batting performances:
Who scored the runs? What looked a seemingly innocuous total turned formidable when MCCC suffered a few intial hiccups before the three musketeers - Steve Cummings, Steve O’ Neil and Craig answered the Skipper’s call and saw the team through.

It was one of those matches where, the result seemed in the team’s favor from the very outset , but was peppered with many an anxious moment. The Opposition were never in contention throughout the match though they did manage to spring a few surprises thanks mainly to the uneven pitch

Steve ‘Mr.Consistent’ Cummings scored another unbeated Fifty with prompt support from Steve O Neil & Craig who chipped in with 25 & 29 runs respectively.

Steve Cummings – 50 No
Craig - 29
Steve ‘O Neil - 25

Oppostion Total:144 in 35 overs.

Notable Bowling performances:
Earlier in the day, MCCC did well to restrict Croygas to a total of 144 in 35 overs. Craig & Tush were all hammer and tongs and managed to dent the defences of the opposition – Craig took two and Tush one wicket respectively before Jim Patel struck crucial blows by grabbing 3 wickets.

Jim Patel - 7-0-20-3
Craig - 5-0-23-2
Gerry - 3-1-5-1
Tushar - 5-1-19-1
Imran - 5-0-28-1
Tony Hammond – 4-0-24-0 ( Unlucky to have 2 catches dropped of his bowling)

Match Result: Win by 4 wickets

Champagne moment:
An exceptionaly well taken catch by Gerry off his own bowling . Amazing reflexes - considering the fact that the ball was hit very hard straight on and the Gerry had to to collect it in his follow through.

MCCC Man of the Match:Steve Cummings and Craig Harper

MCCC Man of the Match: Majid Rafiq despite dropping two catches

Additional Comments about match:
Gerry Coetzer won the toss for MCCC and elected to bat on a scorcher of Sunday afternoon with temperatures hitting mid to high 80's.Drinks break was taken after every 10 overs which was a blessing in Sunday afternoon heat.Steve Cummings and Brian Douglass put an opening stand of 70 runs at an average of around 5 runs per over before Brian was bowled for 38 trying to hit the ball out of the ground. In comes Roy Cummings who was promoted to number 3 from his usual spot of 6/7 as lower order batters on last few Sundays have had not much of chance to bat. Roy scored a quick fire 55 in his usual way before given LBW when the total score was 156.
Cummings brother put on 86 runs for 2nd wicket.

Majid Rafiq joined Steve Cummings after the departure of Roy. Steve Cummings and Majid Rafiq put on 42 runs in 6 overs. Steve Cummings was out for 56 on very first ball after 3rd drinks break in the 31st over.

Another Steve - Steve O'Neil joins Majid at the score of 198 in the 31st over. Steve and Majid put on 107 in last 10 overs at a blistering pace without losing any more wickets. Steve O'Neil end up with 30 Not out and Majid Rafiq was stranded at the non-strikers end on 98 at the end of 40 overs.

MCCC ended up with 305 for 3 in 40 overs. After tea break Morden started off with Craig Harper and Tush. Both of them bowled with excellent line and length and kept the run rate to below 3 runs per over. Tush took one wicket in his opening spell and Craig was very unlucky not to take any wickets in his opening spell.

After Craig and Tush, Tony Hammond and Gerry bowled at good line and length. Required run rate was around 9 runs per over after end of 1st 10 overs. In order to score runs quickly Carshalton Athletic lost wickets at regular intervals. Roy Cummings came on late to bowl few overs and took 2 wickets. Despite dropping 4 catches, at no stage MCCC was under any pressure from Carshalton Athletic batters. At the end of 40 0vers Carshalton Athletic only manage to score 207 runs. MCCC won the game convincingly by 97 runs.It was a good all-round team effort by MCCC.

Well the day belonged to the Oceania boys roy ,nick and simon scoring 180 runs between them. The day started with andy winning only our 2nd toss of the season, which meant we got to bat 1st "YEAH".After steve o neil kept the oppostion waiting with his pre match nerves as keith told us the game got under way, although the way steve started there were no nerves,he quickly made 9 runs before getting bowled by a ball that once it hit the pitch kept low bowling him.In strode roy who likes to get on with the job ,he quickly got on with the job scoring 17 off the 1st over he faced, hitting 2 sixes and a 4,in the process smashing a window in the club house and knocking an old man watching off his chair.Roy smashed the bowlers around showing no respect at all for the bowling scoring his 118 in 22 overs, hitting 6 sixes in the process,he and mark batted aggressively for a 157 run partnership in 19 overs.Mark was eventually out bowled after a very good innings .In came the kiwi superstar nick.Nick saw roy get his hundred and then as he was controversely caught behind in the 23 rd over and in the proceeding events roy nearly caused world war 3 as he stood his ground and was told where to go by the opposing players,a very angry roy had to be restrained by nick and before walking off. Nick had turned on his style to score a quick 22 before being caught. In came maj and keith ,keith came and went quickly scoring 9 ,simon joined maj at the crease with the boys scoring quickly and smashing the bowling around at will, before maj was out for a very quick and well made 40,captain andy came in to help simon get the mordens score to a massive 6/330'

Notable Bowling performances:
the team bowled very well andy and cuan opened the bowling with andy bowling an excellent and very angry spell, nearly knocking out 2 batsman, dinting a helmet in the doing and taking 2 wickets, his opening partner cuan started a bit wayward but once getting his line and length bowled well.the rest of the bowlers kept it tight ,with the other kiwi simon doing well before the 2 spinners roy and graham took 3 wickets each, keith chipped in with 2 good overs of spin, before steve vickery took a great stumping off maj's 3 bowl to finish off the innings.

Andy 7 1 27 2
Cuan 7 1 31 0
Simon 5 0 31 1
Roy 6 1 23 3
Graham 3 1 12 3
keith 2 0 16 0
Majid .3 0 0 1'

Match Result: mordens won by 183 runs
Champagne moment:
Roy hitting 6 sixes on his way to 118,needing to change the ball cause he had wrecked it from hitting it into the clubhouse so many times and nearly killing an old man in his chair when he fell off it trying to out of the way.

MCCC Man of the Match: Roy Capitao 118 RUNS AND 3 WICKETS 1 catch

Additional Comments about match:
THE ALL IN BRAWL THAT ROY NEARLY STARTED WHEN HE GOT OUT and the other team saying to nick its us v you isnt it.The cuddington batsman who had no idea how to handle andy's great spell of bowling therefore getting hit on the head.

MCCC vs Natwest 4th XI - Saturday 2nd July 2006
Match report by Brian Clifford

In the absence of the usual skipper, Brian Clifford took charge of the "second" Saturday side, for a trip to Beckenham to play Natwest IVths. This was an early start and a 30 over game in order to watch the football at 4 o'clock.

Stripped of several first choice players (due to the England vs Portugal game), the side included two debutants (Prashanth Reddy and Daniel Denize) plus the returning Andrew Spencer who had not played for MCCC for many moons. The stand-in skipper lost the toss (insert your own useless tosser joke here) and was asked to field in the midday heat.

The usual new ball pairing of Brian and David opened up, with David bowling beautifully to snare two wickets in two balls (sadly the incoming batsman dug out a yorker to deny him a hattrick). With Brian finishing his spell wicketless, the onus was on our backup bowlers to come up with something special to keep us in the game.

Firstly Theo Moore and Matt Oliver bowled in tandem, Theo bowled tidily and his figures (3-0-20-0) are not a true reflection of how well he bowled in his first proper spell for the club. Matt was clearly inspired by last week's success (and the banging calypso tunes being blared out across the outfield by the local ganstas) and returned figures of (6-0-24-2), taking advantage of the turn offered by a dry wicket.

Hament Patel replaced the luckless Theo and found his rhythm, taking three wickets. He was backed up by some excellent outfield, firstly by a jumping catch at mid on by Brian (the batsman must be gutted to have picked out the tallest mid-on in world cricket) then by an outstanding catch at midwicket by Ewan Cotter. Ewan took a swirling catch over his shoulder while running at full speed, nobody could quite believe he'd held it, least of all the fielder himself.
Buoyed by Ewan's fielding brilliance, the skipper threw him the ball to bowl the last two overs at one end. This was either bravery or idiocy on the captains part, given the Cotter's last over for the club consisted of 6 wides and 6 long hops. Ewan didn't let him down, bowling a series of dot balls and nearly bowling the batsman with the final ball of the innings.
With the innings closed on 165-7, Morden faced a stiff task.

Girish Patel opened the innings with Andrew Spencer and the pair set about their task at a rapid rate, never falling behind the required rate. Andrew impressed with a display of straight hitting and Girish enjoyed the fast outfield with his trademark flicks and cuts racing away for four.
There were a couple of close scares, with Andrew being dropped at slip and at mid-on, but by the time he was finally taken at fly slip, the game was won. Imran came in to finish things off in style with a blast through mid-wicket and the game was over bang in time for the football.
All in all this was an excellent performance by MCCC, there were only three recognised bowlers in the side and the guys that filled in did superbly. The outfielding was excellent, with our catching woes firmly behind us! Thanks also to Prasanth who donned the keeping gloves (on debut) in Vivek's absence and took a catch and a stumping despite not having kept since school.
Man of the match - Shared between the Patel brothers. Without Hament's wickets we would have chased a far higher total, but equally Girish mastered a difficult pitch and never looked like getting out.

Champagne moment - Ewan's running catch. Nobody at the club will believe him when he tells them about this catch.

Monty - No Monty award this weekend, we fielded excellently.

Jonty - Ewan again, see above.

Teas - Okayish. Taken at half-time in the football. A selection of sausage rolls, doughnuts and cakes. Sandwiches were a bit duff though.

Oppo - Very nice guys, we watched the football in the bar with them later on.

Fielding was pretty dodgy but no dropped catches. In general the amount of wind generated from the massive swings taking place on the field cuased a gale force warning to be issued in the area.
