MCCC v's Sunday 08 AUG WOODSIDE GREEN - Match Result - WON
By Sam Cope

Unfortunately work commitments have hindered the production of this match report by some weeks. You will, therefore, have to forgive my rather hazy recollection of the game. However, while the stats and figures have by now faded to the realms of Tony’s spreadsheet, I feel it my duty to report on two outstanding individual Corinthians performances.

The first of these came in the field.

Some setting of the scene is required to put the performance of Steve O’Neil in perspective. The sun was shinning, the wicket was good and the outfield like lightning. A mere glance on the ball and it raced away to the fence. The opposition got away to a rapid start thanks mainly to some ineffectual bowling from an opening bowler who shall remain nameless……

Standing at slip watching Steve bowl was, quite simply, a delight. He demonstrated the virtues of line and length bowling, never trying to bowl too fast (something, I hasten to add, we can all learn from). The economy with which he bowled kept Corinthians in the game and prevented the opposition posting too large a total. A score of three hundred had at times seemed likely. But thankfully we were left to chase around 230.

The run chase

Two indiscrete shots from the Corinthians openers (erm…..) and we were up against it at 10-2 in the fifth over. Enter Brian and our second man of the moment Jono. These two played some special cricket. Adding over a hundred. Brian departed for 60ish with around 50 or 60 still needed. While Brian played very well, Jono played one of the best innings I have seen from a Corinthians player (the only other that may have surpassed it, was Robin Hardwick smashing Sussex U16 all round the county ground at Horsham).

He timed his square drives through point sweetly and always along the ground, he was willing to hit straight down the ground over the infield and stole singles off the opposition with regularity. However, most impressive of all was the confidence and precision in which he swept behind square against the slower bowlers. He never seemed in trouble and dominated the bowling all evening. He will be sadly missed next year.

After Brian’s departure Jono was joined by Steve O’. Fresh from being left stranded on 90* Steve allowed Jono sufficient strike to reach his 100 just before Corinthians reached the target. The two men of the game led the sides off. Well played chaps.

MCCC v's Surbiton Conservatives Sunday Aug 15 2004. Match Result - MCCC WON

Match Report by Brian 'The Gazelle' Douglass
We won the toss and elected to bat against a weak Surbiton side, 2 players short. 35 overs was agreed and we made hay, with everyone except Bariq (run out 0) getting into the bowling attack. We were eventually all out in the last over having scored a handsome 266 at an average of over 7 an over.

Notwithstanding this was an 'overs match' and no draw obtainable, Surbiton never seemed to go for a victory and the game ended in victory for MCCC with Surbiton having achieved only half the total for the loss of 4 wickets.

Our runs total: 239

Wickets taken by Opposition: 8

Opposition’s. Runs total: 219

Wickets taken by us: 6

Our batting performance was: Performance score 8/10
Comments: After the early loss of the openers (Andy Fletcher & Steve O’Neil) and Richard Spencer, Brian Douglass played an invaluable innings of 79 and was involved in 2 60+ back to back partnerships with Jess Sharling and Viv Sharma who made 24 each. Some aggressive batting from Krishna (39) and Vic Luis (38 no) helped Morden get a very healthy looking 239.

Our bowling was: Performance score 6/10
Fair
Comments: Good start provided by our opening bowlers Vic Luis and Raj Ganesh enabled us to get 2 early wickets. Epsom’s 3 & 4 batsmen picked runs off easily to add a huge partnership – each making around 80. Tom Hammond, the pick of the bowlers, produced the vital breakthrough and from there on the tide turned. Tony picked up a hat trick (split between 2 overs) and got 4 wickets in the space of 2 overs to put Epsom on the defensive and they played out for a draw. Vic Luis deserves mention for his 11 miserly overs for only 26 runs.

Our fielding generally was: Performance score 7/10
Our catching was: Performance score 6/10
Champagne Moment: Without doubt, Tony Hammond’s hat trick. The wickets turned the match decisively in our favour.

Corinthians batting order: Andy Fletcher, Steve O’Neil, Brian Douglass, Richard Spencer, Jess Sharling, Viv Sharma, Murali Krishna, Vic Luis, Tony Hammond, Raj Ganesh, G Pinkney

Comments: Chasing a big total on a wicket that offered more to the bowlers than the batsmen, MCCC won a thrilling contest. Viv (22) and Steve O’Neil (23) got the reply off to a flying start putting on a quickfire 39 opening stand. Despite loosing Mark and Jess for ducks, Jono steadied the ship with a vital 55. As wickets fell, all the middle and lower order pitched in, notably Andy (19) and Dave O’Brien (21). Needing around 11 an over in the final 6, Krishna came to the crease and played the innings of his Morden career, crashing 31, ably supported by Tushar and Graham.

Our bowling was: Performance score 8/10
Excellent 4

Poor
Comments: Consistent bowling was the key here. Despite a brisk start in terms of runs, Dave O’Brien stuck to his task well, bowling a good line and length and getting some good movement. His figures (8-0-37-1) did not do the spell justice, particularly given the number of dropped chances. Krishna (8-3-27-3) and Jono (8-2-33-2) began to turn the game our way with excellent spells, which took full advantage of the pitch conditions. Graham, having been carted for two sixes in his first over, returned to take a crucial wicket and, rejuvenated, went on to take 3-39 from 6. Given that the opposition was 90-1, to bowl them out for 198 was a big achievement.

Our fielding generally was: Performance score 6/10
Excellent
Fair 4
Poor
Comments: A real game of two halves. Poor to start with, chances going down and mis-fields aplenty. However, heads did not drop. Richard Spencer took two excellent catches, Jono held a sharp chance and Krishna took an excellent catch at deep mid-wicket to dismiss Riverside’s most dangerous batsman.

Our catching was: Performance score 6/10
Excellent
Fair 4
Poor
Comments: As above.

Champagne Moment: Without doubt, Krishna’s clip to the square leg boundary to win the game. A superb individual performance, to win the game against the odds.

MCCC v's Surbiton Imperials Sunday August 2004

Lost toss. 35 overs each. Fielded. Restricted them, with good bowling and
fielding, to 164 for 6.
Achieved target for 5 down primarily due to a superb 90 not out by Steve
O'Neil, ably supported in an 80+ partnership by Steve Vickery (20 not) with
4 overs to spare.
