MCCC vs Turners Hill - Saturday 24 June 2006
Match report by Brian Clifford

Vivek's side bounced back in style from two successive defeats, defeating Turners Hill by ten wickets on a gloriously sunny Saturday afternoon at St Joseph's Hood.

The visitors won the toss and decided to bat first, but were soon regretting their decision as Brian Clifford and David Lumby made early inroads. After a mini revival, thanks to some attractive strokeplay from Edgington and Litchfield (jnr), Richard Wainer was introduced into the attack. Richard destroyed their upper order with an impressive display of pace and control to return season's best figures of 3-20.

This gave Vivek the chance to rest his "big guns" and turn to his "spin kings". Hemant Patel and Tony Hammond spun the opposition into disarray, Hemant picking up the key wickets of Edgington (st Sarohia for 27) and Asterley (neatly ct & bwl 23).

Ewan Cotter and Matt Oliver took the final two wickets, Ewan (aka Russell Crowe) bowling their number 10 with a ball that pitched on leg, turned sharply then rolled along the track to somehow dislodge the off bail. It would be remiss not to point out this was the 12th ball of the over, with Ewan struggling for both line and length. Matt finished things off with a neat off cutter, having been robbed of a wicket the ball before due to some shoddy keeping.

Turners Hill were all out for 106 and in deep trouble, on what looked to be an excellent track.
Morden set about their total purposefully, with Girish restored to his favoured opening role along with debutant Simon Hawkins (who was carrying an injury picked up during his brief bowling spell).

Both players brutally laid into the opposition bowling attack, who were a little wayward but M Lake in particular bowled well with no reward. Simon drove and pulled with brute force, while Girish worked the balls into gaps in trademark style. 15 overs later it was all over, Morden winning by ten wickets. Simon finished on 55* and Girish on 42*. Girish looked in excellent touch and has already racked up 199 runs this season (ave of 49.25).

Due to the early finish both captains agreed on a 10 over "beer game" afterwards. Morden agreed to reverse their batting order, then set off into the field. Brian Clifford donned the wicketkeeping gloves to become the tallest keeper in club history. Morden restricted Turners Hill to 85 thanks to some tight bowling from Ewan (who took figures of 1-5 with no wides conceeded!) and Imran. Brian looked at home behind the stumps taking a catch and a stumping (off of the afore mentioned Cotter). Vivek's awful afternoon continued, downing a decent chance at mid off.

Morden fell just short in their reply, thanks in part to some interesting scoring from lower order batsmen who wanted to make sure they got a bat (they shall remain nameless). David and Brian both racked up unbeaten 20s before being forced to retire, but some tight late bowling meant Turners Hill gained revenge.

This was the first time we've played Turners Hill and the game was played in an excellent spirit. We all look forward to heading down to Sussex for the rematch in three weeks.

Man of the match - Richard Wainer pips several candidates after an excellent spell of bowling.

Notable mentions for Girish, Simon, Tony and H. Patel.

Jonty award - Hemant. Took an excellent caught and bowled, he's now got two catches in two matches!

Monty award - Vivek. Missed two catches behind (off David and Matt)

Teas - excellent.

The Red Cow vs MCCC. Saturday, 17 June 2006
By Steve O'Neil

Toss: MC won, elected to bat
Match format: 35 overs.
Tea: 9/10
Pitch: dry, hard, uneven
Weather: Sunny, hot.
MC match captain: Vivek
Result: MC, LOST.

Dry spell haunts Corinthians batting

On a glorious hot, sun-drenched afternoon a drought was declared at Ham Street, Richmond – at least that’s how Morden Corinthians players must have felt as their runs tally dried up in a despondent batting performance against The Red Cow CC.

The home side stampeded through the Corinthians batting order, as wickets fell with alarming regularity. Udder than Anand J (27), Steve O (26), and Hament P sticking around to skim a little cream off Red Cow’s bowling, there was little further resistance with the bat. In all, a woeful tale of ‘not enough runs’ for the Cows to chase, as Corinthians were all out for 113.

The Red Cow, clearly confident in both their batting and bowling, strolled home with ease, winning by 7 wickets. Of the Corinthians bowling, Brian C broke through early on, claiming 2-44 off 7 overs, and Steve O (1-18 off 4 overs) picked up the third wicket, after Hament clasped a decent catch. Opener Richard W bowled with good pace and line but was unlucky not to have added his name in the wickets column.

In the tradition of a ‘pub team’, it wasn’t surprising that some of The Red Cow players got into the spirit of things from the outset with a cocktail of sun and beer on the field of play. Corinthians on the other hand remained teetotal – perhaps some much-needed, uplifting Red Bull would have aided the visitor’s stroke-play.

The pitch was not the worst recreation ground but it did appear that Old McDonald may well have grazed his cows on it beforehand. However both teams faced the same challenge but the opposition dealt with the trappings more effectively.

MC CC team/batting order:
Anand, Matt Oliver, Vivek Sarohia, Tom Rabane, Hament Patel, Steve O’Neil Ramsadeo, Brian Clifford, Girish Patel Satish Vishwanatwn, Theo, Richard Wariner

'Any muppet moments?
1) The toss. The captain applied some over-spin while tossing the coin and ended up losing it (again).

2) The opposition batsman who edged the ball to keeper Brian off Tony but denied it. The next ball the batsman (deliberately) left a straight delivery to get bowled out, maybe a touch of conscience there.

What was the tea like?

Tea was late but nevertheless good.

Match Summary:

An excellent start for the bowlers. Craig bowled some excellent deliveries and Tush on the other end kept the batsmen on the back foot. Runs were pretty rare and by the end of Craig's fourth over, the first wicket fell. Tush followed suit with a good clean bowled. 8 overs had a score of 22.

Jim and Graham soon got into the act. Jim bowled some very good deliveries, which on any other day, would have got a bag of wickets. Graham kept the batsmen guessing with his flippers and straighter ones. The other two spinners in the team, Gerry and Tony came on and picked up some wickets with some good change of pace and quick spin. The wicket offered some bounce as well and kept the batsman guessing all the time.

Craig while trying to stop a boundary, hurt his right leg and it started bleeding non-stop throughout the match. Nevertheless he fielded impeccably.

Craigs excellent catch gave Steve O'Neil his first wicket in the match. Gerry was the other casualty and he also hurt his right knee while fielding, bleeding slightly.

The late order batsmen started slogging all over the place and soon their score hit the 150 mark. At the end of 40 overs, we were given a decent total of 159 to chase.Tea being late meant we had 10 overs to play before the break.

The openers Anand and Brian started off well. Anand played some good drives and looked in excellent touch. Brian with his Rambo style 'head-band' was looking all set for a big innings. Anand was the first one to go, caught in the slips for 16. It was 22/1. Satish came one down. By Tea we were 40 off 10 overs. After tea, Satish and Brian patiently played out the good deliveries and scored off the loose ones, with boundaries flowing from both ends.

Some neatly executed cover drives by Satish and some 'good-to-watch' pull shots by Brian stood out. Two consecutive sweep shot boundaries by Satish took him to his 50 in the 22nd over. Brian soon reached his half-century and ended up with a well-deserved knock of 61 n.o. In the 28th over, MCCC reached the target of 160. MCCC won by 9 wickets with Satish top scoring on an unbeaten 73.

In short, a welcome change for the Sunday team - who displayed a commendable all-round display. Good captaincy by Gerry who rallied his men well and ensured that everyone got to do his bit for the win.

11. Notable batting performances:
'After winning the toss for once, we took the advantage of having a bat first!! on a very good batting wicket.

Steve Cummings and Mark Bartram got us of to a marvellous start notching up 94 off just 14 overs before Mark was well caught by mid on for 39.

Nick Hughes came to the crease and played his usual strong strokes and Steve was still attacking BK's bowling. These two had a 115 partnership before Nick was given out LBW for 58.

Azam looked full of confidence... unlucky son!

Ok so now it was time for Roy, the Cummings together again to conflict more misery to their bowling attack. Steve was finally out in the last over of our innings, knocking a fantastic 163. Roy remained unbeaten on 62 and AJ zero not out.

'
12. Oppostion Total:
'206 all out'
13. Notable Bowling performances:
'Ok, so we had a big total. We opened with Simon Watt and Keith Pilgrim, and the boys bowled very well, especially Simon, some real corkers in there.

Jesse bowled steady and true. Azam ( what's happened to my run up) Malik was firering in some excellent deliveries and deserved his two wickets.

Now we shall talk about the difference in class between Jason Ware / Keith Pilgrim and Roy Cumming.... Roy was mixing it up and putting the batsman under all sorts of pressure, without any reward of a wicket. Jason bowled well, and when he decided to let the ball bounce before reaching the batsman he was rewarded with two wickets. Now Mr Pilgrim, he started off being hit for a few but soon settled down and got a very good wicket. But on Keith's second spell he bemused the batsman with some varied bowling!!! but the guy done great, whilst entertaining us he took a fantastic Hat-rick to close the match.

Nearly forgot to mention the catch (yes catch) by Azam in the slips!!! Nice one.

OV. Wckts. Runs.
Azam Malik: 5 2 20
Simon Watt: 7 0 26
Keith Pilgrim: 7 4 40
Jess Sharling: 6 0 28
Jason Ware: 6 2 28
Roy Cummings:7 1 37

Steve Vickery: 1 stumping.'
14. Match Result:
'MCCC won by 134 runs'
15. Champagne moment:
'Keith Pilgrims superb "hat-rick" ball (which was quite wide) that led to the BK batsman stretching and pulling him out of his crease and Steve Vickery stumping a bemused batsman and then everyone just cracking up with laughter. Hey Keith well done mate. '
16. MCCC Man of the Match:
''
17. Additional Comments about match:
'A great team performance and very well batted Steve Cummings and well bowled Keith.

I think this weeks "mom" award has to be shared by Steve Cummings and Keith Pilgrim.

I know the "seconds" think they can give us a run for our money but do you think you could live with this performance!? Bring it on lads.

Thank you to BK for their great team spirit and their part in an entertaining match.

Satish Pushes the run rate alojng
MCCC vs. Presidents XI Saturday 10 June 2006

By Brian Clifford

Vivek's side missed a golden chance to beat a very strong Presidents XI side on Saturday, sliding to a 26 run defeat.

The game did not start well, with two players getting lost on the way to the ground (Tom and Richard, you know who you are!). Then Brian C opening the bowling and serving up a 9 ball over, thanks to some one-day international style wide calling from the aged umpire at his end.

Satish opened up from the other end (in the absence of the metronomic David Lumby) and was quickly into his groove, dismissing both openers cheaply. Brian continued to struggle with his line (according to the umpire at least) and went wicketless in his opening spell (no thanks to some "home" umpiring decisions).

Presidents XI rebuilt to 80ish-2, until the ball was thrown to Imran Ahmad who took a wicket with his first ball (avid readers will realise this completed his hattrick carried over from the last two balls of last week's game). Imran seemed stunned by it all, until he finally celebrated by charging around like madman.

Hament took over at the other end and picked up two wickets, deceiving the batsmen with flight and guile (he could easily have had more, had our catching not been so desperately poor).

With the last ten overs in sight, Presidents XI started to throw the bat and upped the run rate in spectacular style. MCCC began to wilt in the heat, with catches being downed with alarming regularity. The only safe hands on display were Tom Rebane (two tough catches held looking into the sun) and the attractive young lady who nonchalently caught a six while ambling around the boundary edge.

Presidents XI finished on 203-9, in reality we could have bowled them out for 140 but dropping around 15 catches (we all lost count by the end) cost us dearly.

In response Morden started brightly, in the face of some very good bowling. Girish and Satish put on 80 for the first wicket. Satish in particular looked in excellent nick, cutting and driving beautifully.

But all good things must come to an end and Satish fell on 48, agonisingly short of a well deserved fifty. This brought in Brian who had been promoted to pinch-hit. Brian failed to hit, let alone pinch-hit and soon returned for a duck.

Morden's innings then took on a familiar look, with Girish nudging and flicking singles, while the man at the other end went for the big hit. Imran made an brave 18 (batting with a suspected broken finger sustained dropping a catch in the first innings) and Vivek scored 10 before being run out.

It all fell away a little after that, with Barik (1) and Richard Gambrill (6) being left with too much to do in too short a space of time. The innings finished with the Patel brothers at the crease, Girish (64*) and Hament (4*).

The catches aside, this was a very impressive performance by Vivek's side against a strong Presidents XI team who comfortably beat the "first team" last season. In the end the oppo's bowling was too good for us to chase down 203 at nearly 7 an over. Also, thanks to everyone sacrificing their Saturday afternoon which could otherwise have been spent watching the World Cup.

Man of the match - Satish. 2-18 and 48 runs just pips Girish.

Monty award - Richard Gambrill - 4 drops on debut and one through the legs
for 4!

Jonty award - Tom Rebane - 2 catches and an excellent all round fielding performance.

Champagne moment - Imran completing his hattrick.

Notable batting performances:Roy, after trying to run out anyone who was expected to get more runs than him, blazed his way to 78 n/o at the expence of his bruised bat. Azzam after some unlucky decicians lately pulled out a solid 33 n/o. Well batted boys!

Oppostion Total: 160 from the slowest 40 overs in the history of cricket.

Notable Bowling performances:Nick bowled a superb spell late in the innings with 2-15 off 6 overs. No other notable bowlers. Azzam 2-27, Mike 1-19

Additional Comments about match:pecial mention to Cuan for making it to the game with a hangover (almost hurling on the field) and supporting the team from the outfield with such enthusiasm! MCCC vs Kinstonian 3rd XI - Saturday 04 June 2006

Craig smacks his way to 152 not out

Vivek's team returned to action for the first time in three weeks, taking on Kingstonian (who only had 9 men, due to some late drop-outs). Vivek won the toss on a gloriously sunny day and thankfully decided to bat first.

Vivek and Girish opened up and having survived a series of close lbw decisions, Vivek was finally adjudged out, caught behind (10). That brought Craig to the crease, which Kingstonian were soon to regret.

Craig and Girish put on 232 for the second wicket, with Craig tucking into the depleted Kingstonian attack with gay abandon. He racked up 156* at far more than a run a ball, striking 19 fours and 4 sixes, compiling the highest score ever by a Morden Corinthians player.

The partnership was finally broken when Girish fell, having scored a patient 64. This gave Imran a chance to get to the crease, a rack up a quickfire 17*. Morden closed on 282-2.

The players were grateful for a break from the unrelenting heat at this point and tucked into a fantastic tea (compliments to the chef, as ever).

After the resumption, Kingstonian were soon in trouble thanks to a double strike from Brian Clifford, aided by some excellent catching from Girish and Richard Wainer (on debut).

Kingstonian briefly rallied, but were again pegged back when first Brian pulled off an amazing run out and then a double strike from Richard (who looked an excellent addition on debut) left them 6 down at the halfway stage.

Vivek took this as a chance to rotate the bowling, even giving Ewan Cotter (aka Russell Crowe) a bowl. Kingstonian unsurprisingly tucked into this particular buffet, taking Cotter/Crowe for 31 off of his 3 overs, although he could have taken a wicket had Imran not lost the ball in the sun.

The game continued to meander along until the final over (the 41st, due to some frankly awful scoring by the oppo), which Imran was "awarded". Imran charged in like a young Waqar Younis, repeatedly beating the bat before bowling the last two batsmen with the final two balls of the match. This leaves Imran on a hattrick next time he bowls, South London holds it's breath......

Man of the match - Craig Stewart. Amazing knock.

Chapagne moment - Brian Clifford's dive and throw to pull off a spectacular run out.

Nominal fines for drops - Hament (off of David Lumby), Satish (a caught and
bowled) and Richard (again, off of the luckless David Lumby).
