MCCC Saturday 1st XI vs Crossbats CC Lost by 16 runs
By Ewan Cotter

Despite getting off to a fantastic start, with a wicket from the first ball of the season, MCCC lost by 16 runs on Saturday in the first game of the season.

With it being so early in the year, this away game was played on an Astroturf pitch. The opposition, Crossbats, were playing there for the first time as their normal ground is being renovated. The ground sat just off the A316 in Old Deer Park. There was a funfair in residence across the road, and the game was conducted for large periods against the soundscape of modern dance hits thudding out from the speakers, and drunken teenagers shouting in a children’s playground.

The ground was a bit wet, and maybe with a slippery ball in mind, Crossbats chose to bat having won the toss. The decision looked a bad one after only one ball, when Tush Wadhwa bowled the opposition skipper. Unfortunately for MCCC, his opening partner was not so generous with his wicket, and despite losing their number three quickly, also to Tush, a big third wicket partnership was soon developing. The batsmen gradually took on distinct roles, with the opener Collier the run scorer, while his partner Carter had a more circumspect outlook. They put on 126 for the third wicket, with Collier eventually reaching 114. Although the rub of the green went with the batsmen on a couple of occasions, with the ball falling between fielders more often than not, it was a very good innings and certainly bodes well for his season.

The MCCC bowling performances saw Tush and Roy Cummings hit the ground running, with 7-2-17-2 and a rather unlucky 7-0-18-1 apiece. A new player, Chirag Patel, showed promise, his spin taking 4-0-22-2. Another new player, Azam Malik, recovered from an uncertain start to post 5-2-21-0. Once he sorts out his run-up he should be a real asset to the club. Brian Clifford had a game of two spells, ending up with 7-0-33-1, while Jadid Khan and captain Tony Hammond have better days to come this season with the ball. Overall, for the first game of the season, it was a good fielding performance by this unfamiliar side.

Morden’s reply started briskly, Harris Khan and newcomer Theo Moore trading mostly in boundaries before they were out for 13 and 12 apiece. Another new player, Nick Hughes (2), was unfortunate to receive a ball which kept low and darted in from outside off stump to hit middle. That brought Roy Cummings (34) to the crease, and he looked dangerous, scoring runs as Ewan Cotter (4) stuck around at the other end before getting a ball similar to Nick’s, whereupon Azam Malik (19) came in at six and proceeded to build a partnership with Roy which looked for a while as if it could win the game for MCCC. It was ended in the most unfortunate of circumstances. Azam drove straight, but it hit the bowler’s foot and from there on to the stumps: Roy, backing up, was out. Chirag (9), Tush (8) and Tony (0*) provided support to Brian, whose 33 included a six lofted over cover and a couple of meaty fours as the 2005 fielder of the year runner-up bettered his last season’s total runs in one innings, and gave MCCC some hope of a positive result. Unfortunately, and with the run rate creeping up once again, Brian was bowled by Leight going for another big hit, leaving Morden 16 runs short and Crossbats the victors.
