MCCC vs Riverside AWAY Saturday 29 July 2006
MCCC win by 2 runs
Match Report by Cuan Broan
On a balmy Saturday afternoon, the Morden crew descended apon the Alexandar grounds not realizing what was in store for them. Heroes were to be made on this unsuspecting wicket in the middle of Epsom. New signing Jason, immediately set about investigating the pitch, but showed his lack of knowledge of the English wickets when he could not figure out which of the 6 evenly mowed pitches we were going to be playing on. This was probably because he was looking for the Africa like concrete clay strip, and could not discern the differences between the grass on the pitch and the feld! We also suspect the groundkeeper was on strike that week or the mower had broken down.
The day started with an omen that surely foretold the outcome of the day. Our skipper, Andrew, widely know by one and all as a poor tosser, managed to push one out. And he managed to win the toss too. Morden were to bat first, a rare thing indeed. Play was delayed due to the low flying pigs buzzing the pitch.Jason and Mark strode to the crease, and immediately set about their tasks with grit and determination. The fast outfield and small boundary meant that ball raced off the bat and boundaries seemed to be the order of the day. In fact there was very little running throughout both innings of the game by batsmen or fielder alike, because everyone was watching the ball accelerate to the neighbors gardens.
Riverside initially bowled a good line and length and seemed to be getting assistance off the pitch with movement and tennis like bounce. Mark started off well cracking some glorious shots to the boundary, but, was unfortunately dismissed by one of the opening pair for 8. Our secret weapon, the Nick "The big easy" Hughes made his way to the wicket. Unfortunately the excesses of the previous week seemed to show in the batting performance and Nicks reach seemed to extend to the pint glass only. In his quest to unite his fags and his pint, he was cleaned bowled and trundled off to light one up.
Next up was Magic Majid, a classy wristy player that started well and quickly blazed his way to 30 odd runs. It was at this moment that riversides tactical game play came into affect with the introduction of a devastating spinner. The first delivery came out of the hand and was well on its way to point fielder when Maj had a moment of insanity. Maj raced the 30 or so paces to the point fielder and played a devastating stroke straight into the hands of the cover fielder, whom had no choice but to catch the ball. Failure to do so would have meant that that the ball would have traveled through his abdomen and removed his spine.
Steve O Neil strode into the fray and due to his counting abilities (that did not include odd numbers) decided that the number for the day was 4, a vast quantity of them to the delight of the riverside bowlers. Roy "Jack Rabbit" Cummings arrived at the crease to deliver some solid strikes and big sixes. Roy decided that he would call the runs by running up to his batting partner and whisper it in his ear. On occasion his batting partner did not agree with the decision which meant Roy would need to run 2 for no result. Rob ambled to the crease using a Q's new £20 bat and prompted started knocking it in for a healthy score of 19.
Andrew J made a short amusing trip out to the batting track which failed to trouble the scorers. This included a demonstration on how to leave a full toss delivery aimed at the top of off stump. Jason "I can bat a bit" Borea held up an end for 39 overs showing some devastating form and offering very few chances. Jason dispatched all the riverside bowlers with disdain, including 18x4?s and 4x6?s in his total of 125. One would say that he seemed to acclimatize quite comfortably to the English wickets in helping MCCC reach a respectable total of 273. A rather defendable score, or so we thought!
Riverside strode to the crease with purpose and fire in their eyes. The openers got off to a solid start and besides a drop catch and some streaky edges through the gulley region, batted extremely well. Riverside did not lose a wicket until close on 100 runs. The bowling line up had a torrid day, on a wicket that favored the batting. Well, that was excuse they used for going at around 7 an over (besides our skipper Andrew). At 170 odd for 2, with 14 overs remaining it seemed as if the game was in the bag for Riverside. Confidence were high, as were the comments from the sideline. So much so in fact, that pads were removed, kit bags packed and some of the team even went off to shower.
The turning point in the game came when Andrew "Skip" Jarret brought himself back on. Looking down what seemed to be the barrel of the gun, the skip struck. Firstly, removing the stylish opener on 127 whom was caught enthusiastically by a sobering Nick Hughes. To further pull the game back, he then trapped their dangerous bat for the first LBW decision of the season. This was the tuning point of the game. With 50 odd runs to get in 10 overs, the cat was squarely set amongst the pigeons. The recent silence from the sidelines was complimented by the voices on the field which MCCC seemed to have lost between the 10th and 30th over's. MCCC kicked into high gear taking holding some great catches in the deep and bowling a tight line and length.
Riverside kicked into high gear, pulling pads on and unpacking the kitbag. Andrew was joined by a resurgent Roy and Steve "Bowl me at the death" O'Neil to put the brakes on the oppositions innings. The wickets tumbled as Riverside hiccupped. The cricketing gods pulled the overly confident opposition onto their knees and proceeded to spank them black and blue. Riverside collapsed, losing 6 wickets in 40 runs. At 263 for 8, with 6 balls remaining and 11 runs to win the game was on.
Steve O Neil was tasked by the skip to finish off the innings. With hearts in our mouths and the oppo biting their nails on the sideline the bat drove the ball to deep long on which was parried over the boundary by Jason "I can bat but cant bowl" Borea for 6. One delivery left, 3 to win, 2 to tie, 1 to lose. Steve "Nerves of Steel" O Neil fired the delivery into leg and a single was taken, in trying to make the second the opposition were run out! MCCC had WON by single run!!! Over 500 runs, 17 wickets (stumpings, run-outs, great catches, caught and bowled) and some hefty shots, this game had it all. If Carlsberg scripted cricket games, they would have scripted this one!
